Community voices: Influencing policy and acquiring funding

As part of our series of community calls, members of the Taking the Lead network come together regularly to learn from the experiences and expertise of one another.

For our call in April 2023, we were very lucky to have Angela McLeary and Paul Kithima kicking off the conversation and sharing their experiences of influencing policy and developing relationships to acquire funding.

Paul is the Director of Bondeko Refugee Livelihoods Centre, Uganda, and the CEO of GLOs, The Grassroots Consortium. He is also the Chairperson of the BYTI Initiative for disabled children. Paul has experience in advocacy and influencing at national level and UN fora. Watch below Paul's insightful intervention.

Angela is a Lived Experience Campaigner at One Strong Voice, based in the UK. One Strong Voice campaign for a more welcoming environment for refugees and migrants in the UK. One of their most popular campaigns is a parody newspaper called METBO. You can watch Angela's powerful intervention below.

The Taking the Lead community calls are being hosted by MobLab Collective's Emma You Biermann. Emma's mother was herself a refugee from Cambodia who fled to the UK in the 1970s as a result of US bombings on her country. Emma is a transformational trainer, facilitator, strategist and physical movement practitioner, working for trauma informed systems change.

During the call, interpretation was provided by Na Takallam.
